History at Troy!

September 17, 2017

Hello HXC Community!!

Another great week is in the books for our team.  In fact, you could argue this was one of the most historic weeks in our team history!  We had our last home meet on Tuesday.  Coming off the weekend and having that be our 3rd race in five days, we were on tired legs and our times reflected that.  Up and down the roster, our times were slightly down, but we competed well and are banking on these races paying dividends over the next few weeks.  Based on our last few weeks, I'm thinking of adding one last time trial on the home course, so we can see where we stand closer to the end of the season.

Friday was our Halloween in September and “carb loading party”.  Thanks to all the parents that contributed!  It was a great dinner, and hopefully a new tradition was born!

Saturday was the big one at Troy.  If you’ve been on the team a few years now then you know that Troy cannot be run in reasonable weather…..it’s got to be extreme!  This year, it was the heat.  With temperatures expected to reach the mid-80s, it was going to be critical that we hydrated in the days leading up to the meet and conserving energy the day of.  We felt if we could do those things, we could turn a negative into a positive.  Although I was at the starting line for the whole day, the reports I got back from camp came were great!  Athletes were staying in the shade and getting mentally prepared for their race.  First off were our 6th graders:

In only their second invite, they came out and competed well.  In fact, many of their times were comparable to what our 8th graders ran when they were in 6th grade!  Top finishers included Sara (7:48), Kendall (8:40) and Joslyn (9:10).   The boys were led by Kyle (7:39), Emilio (7:41), Alex (7:49), Ben (8:26), and Cameron (8:28).

As the temperatures started to rise it was now time for the 7th graders.  Our girls battled hard and just missed a 3rd place trophy by 20 points in route to finishing 5th.  We made the decision to move Olivia up to the 7th grade race, and she did more than hold her own as she won the 7thgrade race as 6th grader!  She was just the 2ndHerget athlete to win an individual title at Troy!  Taylor Truckenbrod won the 8th grade girls race in 2012.  Following Liv were Tori 15th place (13:24), Lizzie 40th place (14:18), Gracie 59th(14:37),  Kenzy 62nd place (14:46), Amanda 113th place (15:36), Olivia 156th place (15:56), Jazylyn 204th place (16:56), and Salma 235thplace (17:58).  They boys used a tight pack once again to finish 22nd which was still in the top half of the meet of 57 teams!  Aryan was 52 place (13:02), Carter 107th place (13:52), Quinn 114thplace (14:01), Tommy 175th place (14:47), and Charles 176th place (20:27).

Finally up were the 8th graders.  With temperatures now in the mid-80s I was definitely nervous to how our bodies would respond.  Our girls were champions last year and had the added pressure of trying to repeat.  We had discussed a conservative approach over the first half mile and wanted our pack to be around 2:55 and in the top 40.  They executed it perfectly and move up from there!  We placed 6 girls in to top 25 to repeat as champions!  Leading the way were Meg 3rd place (12:19), DT 10th place (12:56), Jenna 12th place (13:02), Karina 13thplace (13:02), Kate 14th place (13:03), Ella 20thplace (13:08), Katelyn 128th place (15:32), and Trinity 281st place (17:37).  The last race of the day was the boys 8th grade.  The boys have really began to gel over the last few weeks, and I had a feeling they could improve on their third place finish from a year ago.  They rose up to challenge and won the meet edging out the defending champions Yorkville!  Boys were led by Nate 3rd place (11:19), Ryan 5th place (11:38), Jay 10th place (11:49), Aiden 18th place (12:05), Brandon 34th place (12:17), Ty 42nd place (12:25), Brock 51st place (12:29), Andy 95thplace (13:07), Nate 116th place (13:20), Rocco 172nd place (13:51), Eli 219th place (14:28), David 234th place (14:40), Justin 295th place (15:44), and Will 318th place (16:18).

I would like to highlight two athletes to show what a difference a year can make.  Last year Karina was 110th place in the 7th grade race running a 15:14 and Jay was 51st  in the boys division running a 13:13.  Both athletes dedicated themselves over the summer, and yesterday Karina was 13th place running a 13:02 and Jay was 10th place running an 11:49.  It’s a very simple formula for improvement that all our younger athletes can follow.  Dedication and hard work.

This week we will have a meet on Thursday at Bednarcik, and Saturday at the Tiger Trails Invite in Oswego.  I handed out Tiger Trails info last week, so please let me know if the info sheet did not make it home.  Friday will be our TALENT (less) show!  This is always one of more looked forward days!  Athletes will have 3:00 minutes to showcase their talents or there lack of!  We have had musically solos, skits, magicians, and everything in between.  It’s all by volunteer and is a nice fun way to wrap up the week.

Monday September 25th will be our Chipotle fundraiser.  Chipotle will be donating 50% of their profits to HXC between 5:00-9:00.   Please help to spread the word!  I will be handing out fliers tomorrow at practice.  If you like burritos and HXC, then this is really a win win.  As always, thanks for all the support!  #runhxc #beelite
