Troy Success!
September 16, 2018
Hello HXC Community,
Coming into Troy week, we had a lot of positive momentum that we wanted to keep rolling. Troy is one of largest middle school invitational in the country and is always loaded with great runners in every division. Although we tried to prep our runners all week, unless you’ve experienced Troy, it’s hard to fully grasp the size of it all until you’re there. With temperatures expected to be in the mid-80’s, we emphasized to our team that they needed to be conserving energy and getting ready for their race. Troy is scored through each grade and gender. This type of format tends to benefit larger schools as the higher your school population the greater probability you’ll be able to cover each division with plenty of runners. With just over 600 students, Herget is just a moderately sized middle school. For comparison, Rotolo the overall meet champion has an enrollment of over 1,400. That being said, we usually give a good showing of ourselves in this type of format!
First up were the 6th graders. Getting the benefit of cooler weather in the morning, our 6th graders were ready to go! The 6th grade course is a little over a mile long, so on Wednesday, we tailored our workout, so the 6th graders could get a feel of that distance. Their two mile pace would be too slow, so they really needed to adjust their strategy to be successful at Troy. Our girls came out and collectively put up their best meet of the year and placed 5th, just one place away from a trophy. We were led by Jacci 11th place (6:48 and a new 6th grade girls record!), Natalie 23rd place (7:01), Kaylnn 48th place (7:19), Baylee and Avery 93rd place (7:41). The boys also executed a great race strategy and finished 6th in a 68 team field. Boys were led by Dominick 2nd place (5:55), Aden 33rd place (6:37), Nate 57th place (6:52), Nicky 61st place (6:54), and David 69th place (6:58).
The 7th graders were now up and ready to run the full 2 mile course. As I mentioned last week, our 7th grade girls have made quite a jump this season and that continued at Troy. One example is Kendall, last year Kendall placed 237th and this year she improved all the way to 48th place (14:30). Also, Isabella in her first year of XC has made quite an impact! She placed 18th (13:32) to bring home some personal hardware! Also placing for the girls were Sara 123rd place (16:16), Amaya 154th place (17:10), and Joslyn 167th place (17:35). The boys ran a spirited race and competed well. The twins had another solid showing with Ayden placing 10th (12:08) and Devyn placing 11th (12:09) Also scoring for the boys were Emilio 216th place (16:07), Kyle 217th place (16:09), and Ben 223rd place (16:18).
Last up were the 8th graders. The 8th graders had the added challenge of conserving energy all morning to be prepared for their race. The course would be running fast, and we needed to feel fresh and ready to go! We made the decision to move Olivia up to the 8th grade division, and she did a great job starting our scoring with the lowest number possible as she was the individual champion running a 12:20! Following Olivia was Tori 15th place (13:37), Kenzy 37th place (13:37), Grace 45th place (13:51), and Lizzie 56th place (14:00). The boys were the last race of the day and came out and gave it their all in very tough conditions. Boy’s finishers were Aryan 84th place (12:44), Quinn 154th place (13:45), Lucas 168th place (13:56), Tommy 208th place (14:40), and Andrew 230th place (15:29). This upcoming week is our last home meet on Tuesday. Thursday is our picture day, and athletes will need their uniform. Tiger Trails is on Saturday. Athletes will need to arrive at Herget at 7:10 on Saturday. Friday will be our 8th annual “Talentless Show” This has turned into one of the most looked forward days of the season. It’s all by volunteer, but any acts will have to be 3 minutes or under. We’ve had skits, actual talents, comedy routines, and everything in between. It’s all in good fun and is usually good for a few laughs! Don’t forget that on September 20th, we have our fundraiser at Potbelly from 5:00-8:00 and 25% of all proceeds will be donated back to our cross country team! Please help spread the word! Thanks for all the continued support! #runhxc #beelite
