Troy recap and the week ahead
September 18, 2016
Hello HXC Community!
The Troy Invite is always the biggest invite we go to, and this year was no different. With 62 teams competing and 2,200 finishers, it’s a pretty awesome day to experience! Drawing the undesirable box of 59, we knew right away we were going to be running slightly longer than pretty much every team, making the start that much more critical. The 6th grade girls started the day with gutsy 12th place finish. We got a little boxed in and had to really work the 2nd half of the race to secure a top 15 finish. Our top five were Gracie 41st place (7:21), Makenzy 62nd place (7:32), and Lizzie 64th place (7:33), Tori 116th place (7:55), and Grace J. 121st place (7:58). Our 1-5 split was 37 seconds, which is fantastic! Our 6th grade boys had one of the strongest team performances of the day placing 9th overall. We beat Plank Middle School by 2 points, who had beaten us handily just a week earlier. We had are top 6 all within a minute of each other: Victor (6:37), Ben (6:54), Colin (7:03), Quinn (7:07), Kyle (7:37), and Carter (7:40). I was proud of the way all the 6th graders competed on the “big stage”. Also, I want to share our 6th grade boys and girls times/places from a year ago, so our current 6th graders can see what is possible: 2015 top times were Megan 7th (6:55), Ella 15th (7:20), Devon 74th (7:58), Kate 81st (8:01, and Jenna 116th (8:16). Boys were Jay 14th (6:47), Ryan 15th (6:47), Aiden 40th (7:09), Nate 71st (7:25), and Brandon 81st (7:32). Those times and places are very similar to how we ran yesterday and look and how those same athletes place in the 7th grade race……
Our 7th graders brought their “A” game and were on fire from top to bottom! The girls secured Herget’s first evert team championship at Troy! Megan led the way with a 3rd at (12:54). We then utilized a 20 sec. 2-5 split to secure the championship! Devon 14th (13:29), Kate 16th (13:34), Jenna 17th (13:34), and Ella 26th (13:49). The boys were without Nate due to a family obligation. However, others stepped up to help us get a 3rd place finish! Again, our pack strength was the key with a 45 sec. 1-5 split. Brandon 14th (12:30), Aiden 30th (12:44), Ryan 41st (12:57), Jay 51st (13:13), and Brock 56th (13:14).
Our 8th graders were last up and competed well. With only 5 girls, we knew once again everyone had to be on. I think the girls would say that collectively this wasn’t their best day, but I thought they competed well and gutted out an 8th place finish in a VERY deep field. Lauren Hasty put up a top ten finish with 6th place at 12:46. Lolo 36th (13:37), Emily 52nd (13:55), Emelin 76th (14:20), and Christina 148th (15:26). The boys used good pack tactics to place 30th place overall, still in the top half of the meet. Brandon (13:53), Tyler (13:55) and Vince (14:04) had a nice 11 sec. split for runners 1-3.
Overall, it was a fun and exciting day to watch some of the best runners throughout the state compete. Also, I think it’s worth noting that with school enrollment of 717, Herget is a moderately sized middle school. Many of the schools we competed against had well over 1,000 kids and as high as 1,500 in some cases. I like to think we are pound for pound as strong as some the best teams around!
This coming week, we have our last home meet on Thursday. Hopefully, we can put up some solid PR’s on our last home race of the season. Saturday’s invite will be at the Tiger Trails Invite at Oswego Thompson. This is a great invite with some solid completion! Kaneland girls who were 2nd in the 2015 IESA state meet will be there as well as Planks boys who were 8th. Also, the mighty Yorkville Foxes will be attending, and they have one of, if not the most respected, cross country programs in the state. Their girls team will be in competition for an IESA state title this year while their boys team was 3rd last year and figures to be in the running again. It should be a great day filled with some very competitive races! This week’s theme will be our TALENT- (less) contest on Friday. What started as an after practice joke six years ago has turned into one of our most looked forward to days. Any and all talents, or there lack of, are welcome. We’ve have instruments, acapella singing, stand- up comedy, and team skits. Participating athletes will have three minutes to become TALENT-(less) legend! Everyone gets cheered and this year’s winner will receive a broken umbrella we found. As always, thanks for the support! #runhxc #beelite
