City Champs!
September 29, 2018
Hello HXC Community,
What a final week as a complete team we had! Coming into the week, everyone was running great and peaking at the right time. On Wednesday, we had a mid-distance day, and it was a pretty tough workout. Two 500 meter repeats, followed by two 1,000 meter repeats, and two more 500 meter repeats. Pace was to be faster than your race pace. This is the type of workout a month ago that only about half the team would have finished, and on Wednesday, the WHOLE team completed it. Thursday was our last 5 mile distance run and 17 athletes made it to the turnaround in under twenty minutes; everyone else pushed past their previous stopping point to make it the longest training run of the season. The growth the team has shown has been amazing, and it’s been a lot of fun seeing athletes who were walking on their warmup in August finishing up a 4-5 mile run this week! There are no limits.
Saturday was city. Defending the City titles was team goal number one, and we wanted to finish off the regular season on a good note! Girls Varsity was the first race of the day. The girls were very loose in the morning, and after a good week of practice, they were ready to go. When the gun sounded, it didn’t’ take long for our girls to establish position and take control of the race. We used a nice pack for the first mile to really extend our lead which was good to see. We’ve been working on our finishes and staying mentally tough down the last half mile, and it was great to see such strong kicks as we finished. When it was all said and done, we put 6 girls in the top 10 and won our 5th City title in a row! Girls were led by Olivia 1st place (11:35), Tori 2nd place (12:19), Isabella 5th place (12:27), Jacci 7th place (12:33), Lizzie 9th place (12:41), Makenzy 10th place (12:44), and Grace 22nd place (13:27) Boys were up next. Taking off with the lead group was the twins and Dominic. Our chase pack did a nice job of maintaining contact; our 1-5 split was the lowest it’s been all year. Racing for individual gold were the twins and Dominic along with a Bednarcik runner. In a great finish similar to last week; Ayden won 1st place in (10:50) followed by Dominic 3rd place (11:01), and Devyn 4th place (11:05). Rounding out the top 7 were Aryan 8th place (11:33), Aden 17th place (11:55), Lucas 23rd place (12:15), and Nicky 35th place (12:44).
Next up was the girls open. The open races really show our team depth! Our girls were excited to finish up on a good note and immediately took control! Herget claimed the top five places and six in the top ten. Girls were led by Kendall 1st place (13:18), Amanda 2nd place (13:31), Natalie 3rd place (13:33), Baylee 4th place (13:38), Kaylnn 5th place (13:53), Isabella 10th place (14:16), Avery 20th place (14:57), Joslyn 26th place (15:09), Cassandra 35th place (15:34), Amaya 43rd place (15:45), Claire 45th place (15:46), Lillian 46th place (15:47), Abby 47th place (15:57), Gianna 48th place (15:59), and Gisselle 90th place (17:30) Boys were the last race of the day and competed well! Unfortunately, some teams put runners in the open that should have been in varsity, so we didn’t get as many medal as we probably should have. However, David got 6th place (12:39). Following David was Kyden 13th place (13:14), Emilio 15th place (13:21), Colton 17th place (13:31), Andrew 31st place (13:55), Ben 36th place (13:58), Kyle 65th place (14:38), Ian 68th place (14:50), Cameron 73rd place (14:59), James 94th place (15:39), Nolan 97th place (15:46), and Eric 101st place (15:49).
As great as the day was the City meet is always bittersweet as it’s the last time that the whole team will compete together. Our team has shown so much progress since the beginning of the season, and everyone can be proud of what they accomplished! Cross Country in an incredibly demanding sport that certainly tests the limits an athlete is willing to go.
The week ahead is Sectional week. Our girls team will be represented by Olivia Kunio, Tori Lopez, Makenzy Hobson, Isabella Aguirre, Lizzie Gould, Jacci Garfias, Grace Weisse, Kendall Byrne, Amanda Fraizer, and Natailie Goettsch. Boys will be represented by Ayden Jenkins, Devyn Jenkins, Dominic Serio, Arayn Marwaha, Lucas Aguirre, Aden Salgado, Nick Weisse, David Minarcik, Quinn Leonard, and Kyden Dent. We are in 3A which is the largest class system in the state, and we will be competing at the Kaneland Harter Sectional at Kaneland High School located at 47W326 Keslinger Road Maple Park, Illinois, 60151. Girls Varsity is at 10:00, and Boys Varsity is at 10:45-awards to follow. We need to have our best day yet if we hope to get any of our runners advance to the state meet! As always, thanks for all the support! #runhxc #beelite
